GB2SOE set up for five days over the late May Bank Holiday in glorious
weather on the Downs at Horndean, outside Portsmouth which are close to the side of the A3 motorway, and, as many will know, under two sets of HV power lines! This time we ourselves were well away from the power lines and suffered no noise. Some voltage drop caused the station occasional problems, but the use of the trusty Clansman PRC320 radio solved most of these and RSARS members' contacts were made. We signed up a new member, this time an Ex-Apprentice from Harrogate, (they turn up everywhere, don't they?) who recognised many of his colleagues in the displayed photographs, and provided many dubious stories of times past. He has all the boxes ticked but has not yet taken up an Amateur Licence. The site is really an excellent show of ex-military vehicles from the small to the large - see photographs. The Bedford QLR, disguised as a REME vehicle, was a real picture, having previously contained a 53 Set and an R107. For the collector this is a must-have, but filled with radio of the period. The sell-off of Clansman assets is now well underway, and the stalls are stacked - more than can be said for WW2 radio or even Larkspur kit, but when the weather is HOT, who cares? Working distant radio stations is what matters and chatting to the visitors who know more about their past than ever one knows! Off now to get cleaned up, and painted, as the Landrover is getting a bit tired outside, and prepared for Newbury Radio Rally in a few weeks' time. Mike M1CCF/M3ACF RSARS Regional Rally Rep (South) |
