SOUTHERN AREA RALLIES REPRESENTATION

In the field and at the Front

The shows weekend stint was carried out despite the rain and the wind at both Kelvedon Hatch Military weekend and the Dunstable Downs Radio Club Rally, Luton.
We managed to get set-up in the dry, but only just, having taken a wrong turning up the A1, when it was actually the M1 I should have been using - well it all adds to the mileage and fuel used, doesn't it? But the flag and pole never made it as the rains came. Being late arriving I did not have time to put the tent up at Luton, although RAFARS seemed to have arrived better prepared! And where was the RSARS member who offered to come and help? Probably lost in the rain, or decided better of it.
The Bunker Bash is something worth visiting if you are in the area,, between showers and cloudbursts and squalls that is, much of military and radio interest for us all to see. The WW2 enthusiasts have now started to dig themselves in - how many members would want to do all that again! I am not sure how long they would have survived entrenched on top of a hill though, beautifully skylined!
I had some very interesting conversations with Ex-Corps members (one often does, this is the fun of taking the Stand out) and one chap who had some really good photographs of Champs from the early 50's in Herford. He promised more to come.
Luton was dull and overcast from the beginning, and in all fairness the forecast was BAD, so it came as no real surprise. Getting there late did not help, so the tent did not get put up, nor did the flag - sorry but the banner was there, and so were we!
A few members trudged over and signed in, and we sold one pin badge, so it was really worth it all.
