Issue No. 11 - 1st February 2008

Here we are at the end of January 2008 and as expected Bureau activity has been rather quiet. However as can be seen below there have been a few incomings and outgoings and of course many of those thanks to Sam D4/G4OHX operating under very difficult conditions from Island Sal. He had a battle to obtain his D4 licence (maybe D4/full callsign is unique?) and of course the struggle continued whilst there in trying to operate. Being regularly at the end of text messages from both Sam and his suffering but very supportive XYL Grace, I was aware of their working conditions but in case Sam has plans for a future publication of the story I will say no more here than "Well done" to them both. The next traveller to overseas is 5X1NH who goes back to Uganda for one month from 23rd February 2008.
Newer members are again very obvious by their absence from Nets but thankfully one or two of our more senior members have been making an appearance, have been exchanging details, have cards in the Bureau and are sending stamps to prove it, which is good news. (Many thanks chaps.)
We are now reliably informed that we are starting to climb out of the depths of despair and that conditions will start to improve. 40m Nets each weekday morning (controlled by Sam G4OHX and David GM4FOZ with the assistance of helpers) continue to struggle on in the hope of an occasional window. 80m Nets, Tuesday (yours truly) and now Thursday afternoons (being controlled by Peter GØRGB for the first time) have been enjoyable with 14 exchanges being made on the afternoon of Tuesday 22nd January and cards are resulting from which already arriving in the Bureau. Even Tuesday and Thursday evening Nets in the safe hands of Alan G4BXQ on 80m of late, whilst noisy, have been well supported.
Not forgetting of course the Chatterbox Net each Sunday morning which, although not allowing exchanges during the Net, is an ideal place to meet and say hello to fellow members and wait patiently for Dick G3NVK to close the Net and let points gathering commence if new ones are about. Always worth a visit of course regardless of new ones being wanted.
For RTTY and PSK31 enthusiasts of course Arthur G1KRU and Bill GM3KHH would welcome your company on their Nets.
All Net information is shown on the website and/or in the latest issue of "MERCURY".
So all is not doom and gloom - and new, and maybe some not so new members will be made very welcome by all Net Controllers.
The Pop-In-Pop-Out Net took place at New Year's Eve and was relatively successful; however I will say no more as all will be revealed in March 2008 "MERCURY".

Here's hoping for more positive reports during the year, especially with the Bureau now holding a grand total of only 107 cards - not many to share among active members
