As mentioned last month our traveller-to-go Nick 5X1NH is now ensconced in Uganda and for those members not signed up to the RSARS Reflector (you should be!) I am sure that Nick won't mind me reproducing his most detailed email to Sam G4OHX which says it all I think:
Hi Sam
I have a dial up possible from time to time so here is an update - happy for it to be shared. I am now in the house where I shall be staying while in Uganda (apart from trips to Kampala). It is in a good location on a ridge facing north by north west (i.e. good for UK and US). Fortunately it has a 20 foot water tower which is now part of the antenna - my first antenna effort is a dipole at 40 feet and I worked about 100 stations last night (about 2100Z) - some Europe (one MM5) but also US (incl West coast) and a sole JA - so looks good. I have had to take it down this morning while we improve security arrangements but I am hopeful that I will eventually have a dipole at about 45 feet and the support will also be a 40M ground plane.
I have heard EU stations on 80, 30 and 40 but obviously can only work the band I have set the links for as I cannot/prefer not to climb the water tower in the dark! Mk2 will have a pulley so life will be easier. Electricity is still a problem with two power cuts so far (and others scheduled). Power surges are also a problem but I have two rigs with me (last minute decision) and a surge protector (but I recall how well they worked for Pat 'KJW! I am working during the daytime here (i.e. from 0500 to approx 1500Z so don't look on weekdays during those times unless I text Sam.
73 Nick 5X1NH (Tuesday 26th February 2008)
So there you go Nick 5X1NH will be located in Uganda for one month in total and will be enjoying radio as well as working so if he is not on your overseas members worked list I wish you good luck. Nick will certainly doing his best.
Bureau activity
A very quiet month in the Bureau but there has been some activity on nets thanks to some of our more rare members picking up the microphone and key. Activity has also been created by Sam G4OHX by taking over G4CCF F054 and he has been working members SSB and CW so listen out if needed.
To the statistics which you may, or may not, find to be of interest?
