Issue No. 16 - 1st July 2008
As expected (for 'expected' read hoped) the Bureau is experiencing the fruits and labours of the May Activity. Whilst numbers are still down against previous years' activity there is still evidence of much enjoyment which is of course what our hobby is all about.
Having said that not all cards being received are as the result of the May Activity - cards are being received for our wandering operators Sam CT/G4OHX, Dennis F/G3PNF and John TF/G3YSK who allowed us the excitement of not only chasing him around Iceland main island EU-021 but also another island to the south, WestMan Island EU-071, which is rarely activated. So John if you are reading this, many thanks for all of your efforts under often noisy circumstances. Cards are already building-up and being sent for those mentioned.
We cannot fail to mention Dennis GW4XKE and his Merry Men who helped him operate stations from Colerne, GB2ASS and GB4LRG both of which have generated much Bureau activity, especially from Dennis : I think that I have already received four thick envelopes from him, all hand-chiselled from the various handwritten logs and I am sure that he must be at maximum levels of headache tablets and writer's cramp analgesics. However, joking aside, thanks are passed to Dennis for again taking on this task, and of course it is not just for RSARS members that piles of cards are increasing but also for our RNARS and RAFARS colleagues. In fact the stats below include cards to those other Societies.
Very saddened at the sudden drop in membership numbers on 1st June with additional sadness from the fact that quite a number of these were Bureau-users but their stamps remain safe and accounted for - ready for the day when hopefully they will return to the fold.
And on the important subject of stamps I have found that a few members are sending 3 x 1st class stamps instead of 5 x 2nd class stamps. Gentlemen (our lady members are correct) please note that within the Bureau all stamps are equal and I don't write member numbers on the back of stamps . Being ex-RAOC I always use old stock first so although you send me 3 x 1st class stamps (the Bureau takes one to cover cost of envelopes etc.) your two envelopes may have attached to them old 2nd class stamps. Send 3 stamps and I take 30% leaving you two for use. Send 5 stamps I only take 20% which leaves you four for use - you know it makes sense: please read the Bureau instructions on the this website and send 5 x 2nd Class stamps because 1st class stamps are a waste of your money. ("stamps is stamps").

It will be noted by the observant among us that arrivals (cards received) are way up against dispatches (cards sent). No not a bit of lazyitus (good Geordie word that) creeping in but the fact that both Dennis F/G3PNF and John TF/G3YSK said they will be posting their cards to me on 30th June and personally I thought them worth waiting for before sending your next batch.
