Issue No. 18 - 1st September 2008
What a difference a month makes with, all of a sudden, another slow-down in receipts. Reading the various propagation reports from NASA and other agencies around the globe, the emails from Barry G3YEU, it looks as if the positive change expected is even further delayed. Sadly this does have an adverse effect on working Overseas members. 40m nets continue only because of the dedication of our Net Controllers and their similarly dedicated supporters. The Bureau even receives the odd QSL card as the result of their efforts. 80m nets in the evening are also very well supported but afternoon nets - well a few more members joining us would not go amiss, especially new members yet to dip their RSARS toes into the water! And yes there ARE regular exchanges.

Statistics
The Bureau is again looking somewhat barren and I (and assuredly many others) look forward to our newer members, and those maybe not so new, joining nets and exchanging points if for no other reason than keeping Mike GØSWY and me busy
Please have a listen on 40/80m net frequencies as published for there is always a Net Controller doing his best and of course watch for openings on DX bands and try calling/listening for our members overseas. I need the work! We all need the cards!

It does not require a Degree in mathematics to note the continued downward trend of 'Cards Received' and the fact that in comparison with August 2005 we have received only 39% of this total in August 2008. It is the receipts that give the true activity picture as 'Cards Sent' have been dependant on the Bureau Manager and envelope activity/capacity.

I had mentioned the sad loss of our Vice-President Ray G3EKL (SK) last month and of course other members have left our Society since. One of these, Geoff 2EØITV, was a regular Bureau user and we were often in phone contact. Normally it was Geoff asking the quite popular question "Have I any cards?" with my subsequent reply and discussion on our current state of Award claims. A keen PSK and RTTY operator it was a pleasure to see that he had shared the DATA Mode Award with Arthur G1KRU. It is with sadness that I have returned cards that were waiting to be sent to Geoff. For those receiving them back please be aware that Geoff knew that they were in the Bureau and had requested during our last chat on landline "Wait for a few more to help fill the envelope." I think my last few words before hearing of his demise but a couple of days later was "Geoff, I admire your confidence hi!" Like other departed members he will be missed but more so owing to his Bureau activity. I will not mention other members going SK as these will also be mentioned in "MERCURY" and on our website - they are in our thoughts.

On a happier note I mentioned last month having sent cards Down-under and to other Overseas members. Many of us tried to make contact with Alan VK6PG (N2DAN Key) and it was a pleasure to note that contacts were made by a few members (not by me I hastily add) and an example of what the majority of us missed, Alan's QSL card, is shown later herein. If you couldn't manage to work the N2DAN key when it was in Australia it is now with Sam G4OHX (N2DAN Key) who is actually using his own N2DAN key and strenuously working hard (as was Alan VK6PG), especially on 80m and 20m - so no excuse for EU members. Congratulations to Sam and other Award recipients mentioned in the July 2008 "MERCURY".

M1CCF and his Special Event stations have generated a bit of activity for which thank you Mike. I look forward to displaying his confirmation cards as they are received into the Bureau. In the meantime there are also shown herewith more few colourful cards received from members around the country and I wonder who, apart from the owner and card recipients, can name the owner of the friendly chap with the long hair?

The cards mentioned are contained in yet another new idea - a SLIDESHOW conjured up by the Webmaster. To download your copy from our E-Library CLICK HERE.
Either:-
(a) save it to your PC to view later (it will run at full screen if you double-click the saved file - press ESCAPE to exit and it will usually then appear as separate slides or pages in Acrobat Reader)
or
(b) view it whilst online by left-clicking each page as it appears in the separate window of your browser - to end merely close the window in the usual way.

Stations to look for during September are:-
EA5/G3PNF 31st August to 19th September
C3/EA5AVL 19th to 22nd September
CT/G4RWD 21st September to 5th October

We wish Dennis, Les and Ken good working conditions and I for one look forward, hopefully, to getting them in the logs of MØOIC and GØCPO/A plus of course XYL Linda 2E1SIS 3900, who has just finished her stint as G3SIG with 14 in the log, but sadly not all new ones. This has been Linda's second month with G3SIG and in case you have not seen the email from Sam G4OHX, as the G3SIG Award Manager, he is looking for volunteers for 2009 - especially to run GD3SIG as a number of members require GD3SIG to complete the set. Yes, working portable from a tent, is fully acceptable

So have a good month on radio - and until the next one, may many of your contacts be new ones.

73,
