Issue No. 23 - 1st February 2009
Historically January has been a quiet month for incoming (the best gauge for exchange activity) cards from members and this month sadly has not bucked the trend as can be seen from numbers below.
It was a pleasure to receive cards from outside of the UK having received two interesting cards from Mal VK6LC 2088. One shows his base antennas with Mal, Jack and Boomer in evidence. The other shows the Crossman Antenna Farm which was established in 2005 and I just wonder how many members have worked him from both locations? One member is a definite yes, for the cards received from Mal, (via VK6RV of course our VK/ZL QSL Bureau manager - thanks Ron) are both addressed to Nick 5Z4LS who worked Mal on 30m and 20m on two separate dates - well done to both of you.
The other card is from Ken CT/G4RWD 3488 taking a rest from the sunshine at the Algarve. Again this card is addressed to Nick 5B/G3RWF and a pleasure to see that Ken was found by a few of us - not me I hastily add, but I did have the pleasure when Ken was last in Cyprus
Card number four (RAFARS) and displayed with others is covered below.

Reminder 1
Just to remind members that we have Sam G4OHX on his travels this month as V8FHX. To save getting out the DXCC or IOTA list of course this is Brunei IOTA OC-088 and he will be travelling with the N2DAN key AF number of F275 so two overseas contacts available. I am again Sam's link man and will receive updates from him via text messages. These will be forwarded to members via the RSARS Reflector as usual. To those who do not wish to receive them apologies in advance, to those who cannot receive them - why not? The RSARS Reflector is free to all members by a simple sign-up procedure and this allows members (a) to receive interesting information from members, and (b) to actually pass on interesting information to members, quite useful to keep in touch when conditions are poor. We have Barry G3YEU keeping us up to date as to why they are so poor, as I say a great information provider - did I say it was free?
There is a comprehensive HANDBOOK on the Society website.

Reminder 2
The RSARS QSL Bureau is currently located at: 6 Greenland Crescent
6 Greenland Crescent.
Not number 5, not number 8 and certainly not number 9. So please when sending off your next envelope of precious QSL cards please check prior to despatch that you have the house number correct which in number SIX (6). I have over the past few months received cards via a tap on the door from neighbours which is always nice if not complaining about hearing me via their telephone, or over the TV. But I am concerned if cards are incorrectly addressed to another neighbour for I have no doubt he will use them to help fill our nearest landfill site. So please - Number 6 is the number. I am advised by a very helpful post lad (sadly moved on to another area) that all they are instructed to look at and post to the house number; never mind it is the wrong name or street, only the number is read.

Reminder 3
Just a reminder that I do have excellent relationships with my QSL Bureax colleagues of RNARS and RAFARS and cards are regularly passed to and fro for the benefit of our members. If not for RSARS please annotate somewhere on the card RNARS/RAFARS as applicable for I do not have copies of their membership lists. I do very occasionally receive a card which is not recognised as a RSARS member but it does have a member number shown. It is assumed that as not RSARS it must be one of our sister Societies but which one? I do not accept cards destined for the RSGB.

Statistics

As mentioned on opening a low number of cards dropping through the letter box was expected during January and I wasn't surprised. Plus until conditions and joining/rejoining members appear on nets I don't anticipate much activity for some time to come, however it would be very nice to be proved wrong.
The Tuesday PM net of 27th January did prove the above comment wrong as it produced not only 22 members and visitors (23 including MØOIC) but there were 15 exchanges AND the majority of stations were 59 for the majority of the time into Chilwell. A bit of Continental QRM which quickly disappeared after Philip PE1OCC called in to wish members well, however skip length changed very quickly for he was not there when called for a second time. All members exchanging points have stamps at the Bureau which certainly makes my job easier. In fact 15 cards for exchanges made on Tuesday are included in both incoming and outgoing totals below, which can't be bad
