Issue No. 6 - 1st September 2007

The absence of new members, Special Event Stations, members on holiday abroad help to explain the lack of Bureau activity for the month of August. However it was pleasing to receive further cards from our Overseas members, especially another card from Mal VK6LC, Mount Richon, Perth for his successful QSO with Nick 5B/G3RWF. Having seen both cards it was obvious that it may have been a struggle, no doubt with much QRM on the side/on top of both very popular stations, but they completed the exchange of details - well done to both. It was also a pleasure seeing cards between David M3NZR and 5B/G3RWF. David of course with only 10W and before his G5RV was heightened.
On the subject of happily completing the card after exchanging details, please give a thought to the Bureau Manager. The Bureau is held in membership number order and whilst I am overjoyed when envelopes drop through the flap, occasionally landing on our cat Leah, it does make life a little difficult if the membership number of station is not included. You have it, or if your exchange was completed correctly you should have it, and it will help me greatly if it is included on the card. Quite a few cards were received during August without membership number and before I could even start to record and file them I had to get out the RSARS Members' List, find call sign and copy the number of the member worked to their card - personally I think that is your job !
In fact the letter with the Starter Pack to members joining the Society also states that cards should be sorted by member order prior to sending and to those members who always do this, many thanks for taking the time to do so - it is appreciated.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, activity has been low for various reasons, lack of propagation, lack of new (even old) members joining Nets but during August there was little "out of the ordinary activity" but known future activities worthy of mention, as known are:

  • 5B/G3RWF with Nick again on the island of Cyprus from 13th to 28th September. He will be located in Pissouri and with aerial space limited may be restricted to CW only, however knowing Nick he will do his best. Keep an eye on emails while he is away as it is our equivalent of "Jungle Drums".

  • 5X1NH - again Nick on his travels in Africa, this time Uganda which will certainly be a new one for me and GØCPO/A and of course the Station Manager Linda 2E1SIS. Period of visit is 21st to 30th November, and again closely watch your email Inbox for RSARS List Server email messages - what, you have not signed up to them??!!! I am sorry but that is your loss - instructions for doing so are at: http://www.rsars.org.uk/listserv.htm

  • SV1/G4SVC with Tim again on the island of Crete will be of benefit to those members not having worked him during previous visits. He will be enjoying island life from 28th September for two weeks and will I am sure appreciate you saying hello even if you have worked him in the past.

  • GD3SIG will be operated by Mike M1CCF during 18th, 19th and 20th September. For those chasing the G3SIG Award (Manager G4OHX) they will find that GD3SIG is a difficult one to gain owing to the simple fact that we do not have an active member on the island. As the result of a begging letter (email) from Sam G4OHX there were, to the best of my knowledge, three volunteers and I think that these three days will be your only opportunity during 2007! Mike and "team" will attend all Nets that they are able so get logged into Nets early - and hope. Many thanks to Mike and team for taking this on.
Hopefully these special activities put on by members will generate more work at Chilwell in the coming months.
It is hoped that the following figures will be of interest. They show not only the deteriorating activity in the Bureau but also the fact that things can only get better, and who knows, it may encourage a few rare or new members to call into Nets.

  • Cards received Aug 2005 = 762    Cards sent = 612
  • Cards received Aug 2006 = 561    Cards sent = 499
  • Cards received Aug 2007 = 396    Cards sent = 305

  • If anyone requires convincing that member activity is down on previous years just nod, for the figures for 2007 are, as can be seen above, well down against previous years. So for those recently joined members and those at rest owing to conditions - it is not all bad and many of us are still enjoying radio, and especially RSARS Nets.

Many thanks to our Webmaster for allowing me this space, and if nothing else, I hope that it helped you sleep.

    Take care and good hunting!
